Do Ghost Hunters Have to do it in the Dark?

When do things go bump? In the darkness of night. Where does the bogeyman hide? In the dark closet or the darkness under your bed. When do the majority of ghost sightings seem to occur? At night or in the dark. When do most paranormal investigators investigate? At night, naturally. But, is it necessary.

Mark Nesbitt, the best selling author and creator of the original Ghost of Gettysburg Candlelight Walking tours, has said many times that paranormal investigators do not need to do investigations in the dark. If a location is haunted, it is haunted no matter the lighting conditions. Mark, a very experienced ghost hunter who has gathered a lot of fantastic evidence, is absolutely right.

So why do most investigations take place at night? There are several reasons.

First, most investigators have jobs. There are many amateur ghost hunting groups around the world but very few who do it professionally, so evenings just happen to be the most convenient time for most investigations to take place. Also, the home owners or businesses that call in ghost hunters generally have jobs or want the investigation to be done after hours. Business also happens to be one of the factors in the second reason that ghost hunter do it in the dark.

Second, nighttime investigating drastically reduces background noise, light pollution, distractions, and many other variables that can hinder investigators' concentration and ruin evidence.

There is less traffic on the roads, fewer people on the streets, and generally less going on outside of the investigation area that could interfere with the investigation. Nothing is worse than listening to an audio recording for EVPs or watching video from an investigation and hearing lots of traffic in the background, talking from outside, or seeing headlights passing in every window. A lot of great evidence could be lost or ruined if there is too much going on the background to verify what is being seen or heard.

Also, for mediums and investigators, it is easier to focus on the immediate area with fewer outside distractions. Good mediums and intuitive hunters will be able to pick up on energy and/or spirits regardless of the conditions, but most would probably agree that they are more confident with their findings the fewer the distractions.

Lastly, for this article anyway, investigating in the dark offers the best environment to see or catch on video a spirit's energy.

Orbs, apparitions, and ghosts in general are made of energy, which is why they are able to manipulate most electrical systems at the location they are haunting. It is also why they are easier to see in the dark. Most investigators have experienced what we at Team CPI refer to as a light show. Unfortunately, these light shows are rarely picked up by our cameras.

Catching an apparition on film has more to do with lighting conditions than time of day. For some reason, cameras using infrared light have produced more images than those in regular lighting conditions. It is an argument akin to the age old chicken and egg; does infrared light produce more evidence because most investigations are at night or does infrared light actually pick up the energy of spirits better than other lights on the spectrum? Either way, most full blown apparitions captured on camera have been caught using infrared light.

So, Mark is absolutely right that ghost hunting does not have to be done in the dark. If you are investigating a place that is fairly well insulated from outside interference you will be able to capture evidence regardless of the time of day. Farmhouses, basements, abandoned buildings, or any of the places off the beaten track that Team CPI has investigated have all produced paranormal events before nightfall. However, many of the locations we investigate require the insulation of night to conduct a thorough investigation. When deciding when to investigate, or to have a team come in to a location, consider all the factors that may hinder a thorough, conclusive investigation.

News

05/24/10 - On the 22nd and 23rd of May, Team CPI was represented by Rob Conover, “Wild” Bill Homel, Frank “The Viper” May, and Emily Rogers at the Southern Michigan Paranormal Conference.  Rob Conover gave a speech in the old theatre which was built in 1927.  Rob’s speech was attended by quite a few people and paranormal teams, making it great success!

During the conference we met a lot of great people, for example we met and spoke with the very nice guys of the Chicago Paranormal Detectives who have a show on A&E.

We would like to thank "Big Dog" Dan for having us. We made quite a few contacts and are invited to several upcoming conferences.  Frank May, ate more hot dogs than any human should have, LOL!  And Bill Homel took pictures of just about everything he saw.  Emily Rogers was on her phone playing games most of the trip, LOL!

Actually I would like to thank those three people for making the trip a huge success. I (Rob Conover) would not have been able to do what I had to do nor had the success I had without them.  They are very professional people and do their job exceptionally well!  Thank you everyone!  Pictures to be posted soon!

10/20/09 –
Last night Rob and some of his team (Bill, Frank, Emily, & Misty) went to a Chillicothe, Il to investigate a haunted tavern. Lots of neat things happened, including a light bulb that had been unscrewed coming on again by itself and shadow figures moving about. Everyone had something happen to them. Turned out there was a man and his son from the 1800’s haunting the place but Rob was able to help them move on.

10/06/09 - Rob Conover traveled to Chicago for a two day convention at the Portage Theatre this past weekend. The convention had a lot of great speakers from many different corners of the paranormal world. Rob had the chance to speak with people like Jeff Belanger of ghostvillage.com and even Loraine Warren showed up. Rob had a great time meeting with fans and making new friends.

09/03/09 -  Rob Conover and Bill Homel represented the Team at the Pekin Manor retirement home. They talked to some retired folks about the Paranormal and had such a great time they will be going back in November.

08/08/09 – Rob Conover and Team CPI went to Indianapolis for a paranormal meet and greet. We had a really good time and met a lot of people from a lot of groups around the region. Rob also spoke on a radio show that was broadcasting from the convention. The event was held on the grounds of the Hannah House, supposedly one of the most haunted houses in Indiana! Lots of fun.

07/22/10Bill Homel, Frank May, and I recently took a trip to Gettysburg and met up with the stars of the popular ghost hunting show "Ghost Adventures." We had previously done an investigation at the old engine house where Pioneer Railroad keeps its train engines. We found the place to be very haunted. Zac, Aaron, and Nick had heard about the place as well and wanted to do an episode on the place. Frank, who works for Pioneer Railroad, and I were interviewed about our experiences there.

The three of memebers of Ghost Adventures turned out to be very nice people and we had some very good conversations with them. After talking with Zac for a while I think that we will be seeing some amazing new episodes on his show in the future.

Be sure to check out the pictures from this trip.

08/09/09 - Hello again,
I am very pleased to announce that Dealing with Ghosts is finally available for you to purchase. It has been a long time coming, as my son and I have been revising the booklet for many months now. Since its first publication thirteen years ago, I have learned a lot about what I do and therefore had to go back and change a few things, add a few things, and take out just a couple things. I am very pleased with the outcome and I believe it will help anyone who has a need to purchase it.

The main reason I wrote this booklet is simple: I cannot be there to help everyone who calls. It would be great if I could pack up and leave at the drop of a hat whenever someone calls who desperately needs my help, no matter where they are at. But in reality, it just can't be done. So what I hope to accomplish with this booklet is to give everyone a chance to help themselves, and possibly help a trapped spirit as well. Of course I can't guarantee everyone's attempts to follow these steps will be successful, but I strongly believe that many will.

Also, I hope the many paranormal groups out there who go to people's homes and gather evidence will consider buying a copy. The steps were originally designed for only the haunted, but so many paranormal groups have popped up since then, most of whom I believe truly want to help the families that call them, I have modified a few things to suit their needs as well.

My goal in life for nearly 20 years has been just one thing: to help the spirits trapped on earth and help the families that they haunt. With this booklet, I hope that others feel the calling for a higher purpose as well. There will always be plenty of spirits to investigate, people pass away everyday and not all will cross through the light, but for many of the people being haunted, the evidence does not matter; they need help, just like the spirits haunting them.

As I said in the beginning, I am pleased with the way the booklet turned out, and I only hope it will help those who need it.

06/14/09 -  Hello,

My son Brad and I had the pleasure of attending the North Central Indian Meet & Greet at the Honeywell Center in Wabash, In just the other weekend. The event was hosted by the Wabash Paranormal Investigation & Research Group and had a great turnout. We met a lot of teams from the region and I even got to meet many of the hosts of the radio shows I have done and will be doing. Overall it was fantastic and we are ready for the next one!

During the meet and greet they also had a paranormal photo contest to raise money for the Youth Services Bureau. I am happy to report that the photo we entered took first place, raising money for a great cause and winning Team CPI a very nice 4-channel DVR. Thank you to everyone involved for having us and letting us be a part of a great event.

Keep checking back for new events and radio shows I will doing. I can't wait to get back on the road and meet some more people involved in the paranormal field!
